Week of la Francophonie
The International Organization of la Francophonie (IOF), created in 1970, is a worldwide organization that regroups 55 states, 2 associated members and 13 observers over the 5 continents. They are united because of one shared language and culture: French. Spoken by 200 million people, French has the status of official language, alone or combined with other languages, in 32 states and in different international organizations. La Francophonie does not only have actions in the economic and cultural sector, but most of all La Francophonie has a political mission in favor of democracy, defense of international values, multilateral cooperation, solidarity and of durable development. |

The worldwide foundation of the Alliance Française for example is engaged in the formation and education of the French language. The 1071 Alliances Françaises welcome annually over 450,000 students and over 6 million people to cultural events.
March 20, the international day of La Francophonie, is celebrated everywhere in the world. Every year millions of French-speaking people or Francophiles celebrate their shared language and their love for the French culture in general.
In Australia, March 20 brings on multiple manifestations throughout the month of March. In Canberra, the Alliance Française, the Franco Australian school Télopea and the embassies from the different member states of the International Organization of La Francophonie, have joined forces for the organization of several free events in this long ‘week of La Francophonie’. The major Alliances Françaises in Australia also support La Francophonie by organizing French events in their cities.

''La francophonie, c'est cet humanisme qui se tisse autour de la Terre, cette symbiose des énergies dormantes de tous les continents, de toutes les races qui se réveillent à leur chaleur complémentaire.''
